Meaning:*
This name derives from the Syriac Aramaic and Middle Aramaic “Gath-Šmânê > Gat-Šmânim,” Ancient Greek “Gethsēmanē (Γεθσημανή),” meaning “oil vat, oil press, oil mill.” Gethsemane is a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, the most famous as the place where, according to the Gospels, Jesus and his disciples prayed the night before Jesus’ crucifixion. Gethsemane appears in the Greek of the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Mark. According to Luke 22:43–44, Jesus’ anguish on the Mount of Olives (Luke does not mention Gethsemane; Luke 22:39-40) was so deep that “his sweat was as it were significant drops of blood falling to the ground.
