The second element of the name could be “el,” meaning “God” or Baʿal, a Semitic honorific title meaning “master, lord.” 1) Saints Sarbelius & Barbea were two martyrs, brother, and sister, who were put to death at Edessa during the persecutions of Emperor Trajan. Sarbelius, also called Sharbel, was a high priest at Edessa, in Mesopotamia. They were arrested for converting to the faith and were tortured with red-hot irons before execution. 2) Saint Charbel Makhlouf (1828–1898) was a Maronite monk and priest from Lebanon. During his life, he obtained a wide reputation for holiness, and the Eastern and Roman Catholic Church has canonized him.
