The theories include: 1) From the Italic (Sabine) “mamers,” via Latin “māmers,” meaning “dedicated to the god Mamers, consecrated to the god mamers.” 2) From the Latin “mamma,” which in turn derives from the Ancient Greek “mámmē ‎(μάμμη),” meaning “mother.” Saint Mammes of Caesarea is a semi-legendary child martyr of the third century who was martyred in Caesarea together with his parents, Teodotus and Rufina. He is venerated by the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. The feast is traditionally celebrated on August 17.
