Meaning:*
This name derives from the Irish (Gaelic) “máel sechlainn,” meaning “disciple of saint seachnall.” The name derives from the Old Irish and Proto-Celtic “máel / mael,” meaning “bald, bare, shaved, shorn, tonsured (chief, the prince).” In the pre-Christian era, the meaning was “of a slave.” After the introduction of Christianity to Ireland, the name was changed as someone who is devoted (to God or a given saint). St. Seachnall was a bishop and disciple of St. Patrick. In 433, he was named to be the first bishop of Dunsaugli, Meath. He was later the assistant bishop to the metropolitan in Armagh. In honor of St. Patrick, Seachnall composed the first Latin poem of the Irish church, the hymn “Audite omnes amantes Deum.”
