Illidius is attributed to the rise of Clermont-Ferrand as a center of teaching and religious culture. According to tradition, he healed the daughter of the Roman emperor Magnus Maximus. The fountain of St. Allyre at Clermont is known for its petrifying water, caused by calcareous deposits. The feast day is traditionally celebrated on July 7.
