This name derives from the Ancient Greek “Eutrópios (Ευτρόπιος),” composed of two elements: “eû ‎(εὖ)” (well) plus “trépō (τρέπω)” (turn, bend, fold). In turn, the name means “docile, of good manners, versatile, variable.” Saint Eutropius of Saintes is venerated as the first bishop of Saintes, France. According to tradition, he was a Roman or a Persian of royal descent who was sent to evangelize Gaul either by Saint Clement in the 1st-century or by Pope Fabian in the 250s as a companion of Saint-Denis. Eutropius of Orange was bishop of Orange, France after Justus and during the 5th century, probably since 463. According to the tradition, Eutropius was converted by his wife and became a deacon after her death.
