Name Root:
epí manthánō > Epimētheús
Meaning:*
This name derives from the Ancient Greek “Epimētheús (Ἐπῐμηθεύς),” composed of two elements: “epí (ἐπῐ́)” (on, upon) plus “manthánō (μᾰνθάνω)” (learn, know, understand). In turn, the name means “above understanding, hindsight, after-thinker, the smartest, the most intelligent, most learned.” In Greek mythology, Epimetheus was the brother of Prometheus (foresight, fore-thinker), a pair of Titans. They were the inseparable sons of Iapetus, who, in other contexts, was the father of Atlas. According to Plato’s use of the old myth in his Protagoras (320d–322a), the twin Titans were entrusted with distributing the traits among the newly created animals. Epimetheus was responsible for giving a positive attribute to every animal, but when it was time to give a man a positive trait, lacking foresight, he found that there was nothing left.
