This name derives from the Old Persian “Artaxšaça / Artakhšassa (Greek: Artaxérxi̱s “Ἀρταξέρξης”), meaning “who has a kingdom of justice, right governor, the great warrior.” Artaxerxes I was the fifth King of Kings of Persia from 465 BC to 424 BC. He was the son of Xerxes I of Persia and Amestris, daughter of Otanes, and he may have been the “Artasyrus” mentioned by Herodotus as being a Satrap of the royal satrapy of Bactria.
