Name Root:
áristos híppos > Arístippos
Meaning:*
This name derives from the Ancient Greek “Arístippos (Αρίστιππος),” composed of two elements: “áristos (ἄρῐστος)” (best, better, excellent, first-rate, thorough) plus “híppos ‎(ῐ̔́ππος)” (horse, cavalry, horseman). In turn, the name means “the best in cavalry, excellent horseman, one who has the best horses.” Aristippus of Cyrene (~435–356 BC) was the founder of the Cyrenaic school of Philosophy. He was a pupil of Socrates, but adopted a very different philosophical outlook, teaching that the goal of life was to seek pleasure by adapting circumstances to oneself and by maintaining proper control over both adversity and prosperity. Among his pupils was his daughter Arete.
