Meaning:*
The origin of this name is still today quite uncertain. The theories include: 1) Village named “Riosto” near Bologna of unknown origin. 2) From the Old High German name “Ariost,” from the Ancient Germanic “*harjaz,” meaning “army, army leader, commander, warrior.” The name comes from the surname of Ludovico Ariosto. Ariosto was an Italian poet. He is best known as the author of the romance epic Orlando Furioso (1516). The poem, a continuation of Matteo Maria Boiardo’s Orlando Innamorato, describes the adventures of Charlemagne, Orlando, and the Franks as they battle against the Saracens with diversions into many side-plots. Ariosto composed the poem in the ottava rima rhyme scheme and introduced narrative commentary throughout the work.
